The presidential election in Finland was held on 15 and 29. January 2006 instead. Since no candidate achieved an absolute majority in the first ballot, a runoff election had to be held.

The previous President Tarja Halonen from the Social Democratic Party of Finland (SDP) narrowly prevailed in the runoff election against Sauli Niinistö from the conservative National Collection Party (KOK).

As the only party represented in parliament, the left-wing alliance did not put up its own candidate, but supported Tarja Halonen's application.
