The province of Kymi ( Finnish Kymen lääni , Swedish Kymmene län ) is a former province in Finland . It existed from 1945 to 1997 and encompassed the current landscapes of Kymenlaakso and South Karelia . The Kymi Province takes its name from the Kymijoki River . The capital of the province was Kouvola .

After Finland ceded the eastern part of Karelia to the Soviet Union after the Continuation War in 1944 , the Kymi Province was founded a year later from the parts of the Viipuri Province that remained on the Finnish side . In 1949, the Kymi province also received the municipalities of Anjala , Elimäki , Iitti , Jaala and Kuusankoski, which had previously belonged to the Uusimaa province .

Through the provincial reform of 1997, the province of Kymi was merged with the province of Uusimaa, the southern part of the province of Häme and a small part of the province of Mikkeli to form the new province of southern Finland .
