Jaala [ ˈjɑːlɑ ] is a former municipality in southern Finland and is now part of the city of Kouvola .

Jaala is in the north of the Kymenlaakso countryside . The parish village of Jaala, located around 30 kilometers northwest of the city center of Kouvola on the shores of Lake Pyhäjärvi , has around 900 inhabitants. The municipality of Jaala also included the villages of Huhdasjärvi, Kimola, Paljakka-Pökölä, Siikava, Uimila and Verla and had an area of ​​563.5 km². The area of ​​Jaala is rich in lakes (almost a quarter of the former municipal area is covered by inland waters) and characterized by rural areas. The population of the municipality of Jaala was last in 1855. Thus, the population density of 4.3 inhabitants per square kilometer was very low for southern Finland.

The Board Mill Verla in the former municipality of Jaala heard of since 1996 to the list World Heritage of UNESCO . The factory was in operation from 1882 to 1964, after which it was converted into an industrial museum.

The municipality of Jaala has existed since 1877. Before that, the place was part of the parish of Iitti . Until the completion of the Jaala Church in 1878, the residents of Jaala had taken a boat across the Pyhäjärvi to Mass in Iitti. At the beginning of 2009 Jaala was incorporated into the city of Kouvola together with Anjalankoski , Kuusankoski , Valkeala and Elimäki .
