Elimäki [ ˈɛliˌmæki ] ( Swedish Elimä ) is a former municipality in southern Finland and is now part of the city of Kouvola .

Elimäki is located in the Kymenlaakso countryside 23 kilometers southwest of the city center of Kouvola, east of State Road 6 , which leads from Pernå (Pernaja) into Kajaani in northern Finland . The municipality Elimäki comprised the capital of the same name and a total area of 391.7 km² (of which 4.3 km² were inland waterways) and last had 8199 inhabitants. The population density was 21.2 people per square kilometer.

The Elimäki area was owned by the noble Wrede family from the 17th century . This had its family seat in neighboring Anjala . According to tradition, it was given as a gift from the Swedish King Charles IX. given to the family of his Rittmeister, who is said to have saved his life in a battle in 1605. The horse in the coat of arms of the former community also reminds of this event. The Elimäki parish was detached from Loviisa in 1863 . At the beginning of 2009 Elimäki was incorporated into the city of Kouvola together with Anjalankoski , Kuusankoski , Valkeala and Jaala .

Wooden cruciform church in Elimäki

Several manors go back to the nobility of Elimäki, such as the neo-classical Moisio House designed by Carl Ludwig Engel or the Mustila manor house with an adjoining arboretum. Elimäki Church, built in 1638, is one of the oldest wooden churches in Finland. The ground plan of the church was originally rectangular and was enlarged in 1678 in a cross shape. So that the Church of Elimäki is the oldest in use Cross Church of Finland. The stack of bells, which is also made of wood, stands a little to the side on the opposite side of the street.

Elimäki gained further fame in Finland because the title of the Douglas-Adams book The meaning of liff (German: Der deeper Sinn des Labenz ) in the Finnish translation is Elimäen tarkoitus (a pun on Elämän tarkoitus "the meaning of life" ).
