Street in Kajaani

Kajaani [ ˈkɑjɑːni ] ( Swedish. Kajana ) is a city in central Finland with 36,973 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018).

It lies on the river Kajaaninjoki , which flows in a north-westerly direction into the Oulujärvi ( German : "Oulusee"), whose outflow in turn forms the Oulujoki . Kajaani is the center of the Kainuu landscape . Elias Lönnrot , the author of the Finnish national epic Kalevala , worked as a medical officer in Kajaani and from here undertook his research trips to Karelia . Since the incorporation of the municipality of Vuolijoki in 2007, the urban area covers an area of 2,265.5 square kilometers. Only Finnish is spoken .

Kajaani, like many other Finnish cities, was founded in 1651 by the Swedish Governor General Per Brahe . At that time, the wood tar trade was of great importance . This was brought in tar barrels over the Oulujärvi and Oulujoki to the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia near Oulu , where it was then shipped all over Europe to be used for sealing ship joints ( caulking ) .

Sights in the city are the market square with the tiny wooden town hall, the castle ruins of Kajaaninlinna (17th century) on the small river island Linnasaari and the church from 1896. In the vicinity of Kajaani are the Vuokatti ski center , the picture church of Paltaniemi and the home of the Finnish poet Eino Leino (19th / 20th century)

The wood industry is an important economic pillar today . The Kajaani Airport is located 8 kilometers north of the city.
