Paltamo [ ˈpɑltɑmɔ ] ( Swedish historically Paldamo ) is a municipality in northeastern Finland . It is located around 500 kilometers north of the capital Helsinki around the eastern end of Lake Oulujärvi .
In addition to the eponymous main town Paltamo on the shores of Lake Oulus, the village of Kontiomäki and the settlements of Hakasuo, Härmänmäki, Kivesjärvi, Melalahti and Mieslahti belong to the municipality.
The word paltamo means “tar boat”, an elongated boat in which viscous tar was transported. The tar distillery was in Paltamo, as in the entire Kainuu region, an important industry until the 20th century; the tar obtained from the local forests was then shipped to the coast via the Oulujoki , from where it was then exported abroad. Three of the said tarerbeds also adorn the municipality's coat of arms.
For decades, Paltamo, like the entire region, has suffered from the decline of forestry and a structural weakness caused by its geographical peripheral location, and thus had to record a considerable decline in population. In 2004 the unemployment rate was around 22 percent, well above the national average. The traffic development is good compared to other municipalities in the region. Paltamo is on State Road 22 and has its own train station on the Oulu -Contiomäki railway line . There are also regular bus connections to Kajaani , the nearest town, around 35 km south .
In addition to the picturesque lake landscape, the main attraction of Paltamos is a wooden church built in 1726.
