Ristijärvi [ ˈristijærvi ] is a municipality in northeastern Finland . It is located around 40 kilometers northeast of the city of Kajaani in the middle of the Kainuu landscape .

Ristijärvi was once the largest town in the municipality of Paltamo , from which it was separated as an independent municipality in 1867. In addition to the eponymous main town, Ristijärvi, it includes the settlements Hiisijärvi, Jokikylä, Mustavaara, Pihlajavaara, Pyhäntä and Uva. For decades, the rather remote and economically weak municipality, like the entire region, has seen a massive decline in population and is visibly aging. In 1960 it still had over 4,000 inhabitants, today there are only 1288 (as of December 31, 2018).

One of the main economic branches today is tourism. In summer, the main attraction is the vast sandy beaches of Lake Hiisijärvi. They were created around two hundred years ago as a result of a failed level regulation project that suddenly caused the lake's water level to drop by 14 meters. In winter, the hills of the municipality, especially the Saukkovaara ridge, attract ski tourists.

The main traffic routes to Ristijärvis are state road 5 , which runs from north to south ; The municipality is connected to the Finnish rail network via the Kontiomäki-Taivalkoski railway line.

Ristijärvi maintains a 1989 twinning the city Olonez in the Russian Republic of Karelia . It is also the birthplace of Finland's best biathlete Kaisa Mäkäräinen .
