Vaala [ ˈvɑːlɑ ] is a municipality with 2869 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018) in northeastern Finland .
The community is located on the east bank of Lake Oulus , the fourth largest lake in Finland, in the Kainuu region . Around half of Lake Oulus is in the municipal area of Vaalas, as is Manamansalo, the largest island in the lake, measuring 76 square kilometers . Vaala is halfway between the cities of Oulu and Kajaani , 90 kilometers away, and is connected to the Finnish rail network via its train station; trains on the Oulu– Kontiomäki and Oulu– Iisalmi lines stop here .
The community was founded in 1867 under the name Säräisniemi and renamed Vaala in 1954. It includes the settlements of Alasalmi, Enonlahti, Jaalanka, Jylhämä, Järvikylä, Kangaskylä, Kankari, Liminpuro, Manamansalo , Neittävä, Nimisjärvi, Nuojua, Oterma, Pelso, Suutarinkylä, Säräisniemi and Veneheitto.
The largest employers are the municipal administration, the municipal hospital, schools and the Pelso correctional facility ; In addition to agriculture and forestry, tourism has developed into one of the main branches of the economy in recent years.
