Hyrynsalmi [ hyrynsɑlmi ] is a municipality in the northeastern Finnish landscape Kainuu with 2,287 inhabitants (December 31, 2018).

Hyrynsalmi is quite remote about 70 kilometers north of the city of Kajaani . In addition to the eponymous capital, the municipality includes the villages of Kytömäki, Luvankylä, Moisiovaara, Oravivaara, Tapanivaara and Väisälä. Large parts of the municipal area are almost untouched forest landscape, especially around Lake Saarijärvi there are still untouched primeval forests.

Until recently, the area was a center of tar distillery and the extraction of freshwater pearls . Like many rural areas, the municipality has suffered economic problems and a massive population decline over the past few decades. One of the main industries today is tourism, especially in the Ukkohalla ski resort .

During the Continuation War in 1942-44, the German Wehrmacht built a narrow-gauge railway from Hyrynsalmi to Kuusamo using forced labor . Many of the workers, for the most part Soviet prisoners of war, died or were murdered under the difficult conditions, as can still be seen in the mass graves along the route. The path is therefore also known as kuolemanrata ("death path"). After the end of the war, the tracks and technical systems were dismantled and transferred to the Soviet Union as reparations .
