The Oulujärvi [ ˈɔu̯lujærvi ] (German also "Oulusee") located northwest of the city of Kajaani , is the fifth largest inland body of water in Finland with a water surface of 887 km², which includes Kajaani and parts of the municipalities of Paltamo and Vaala . It has several tributaries, such as the Kajaaninjoki in Kajaani and the Kiehimänjoki in Paltamo and drains over the Oulujoki into the Gulf of Bothnia .
Like most Finnish lakes, Oulujärvi is shallow and has an average depth of 7 m. Its lowest point is also only 35 m below the water level. The shallow depth enables the water to be heated up quickly. In summer, the sandy beaches of Manamansalo , the largest lake island in Finland with 76 km², attract many bathers. Oulujärvi usually remains frozen from late November to early May.
