The Finnish state road 5 ( Finnish. Valtatie 5 , Swedish. Riksväg 5 ) leads over a distance of 905 km from Heinola in southern Finland to Sodankylä in Lapland . Along with state roads 4 and 8 , it is one of the most important north-south connections in the country.

Route

State road 5 near Lusi

State road 5 branches off from state road 4 in Lusi near Heinola and leads north through eastern Finland via Mikkeli , Varkaus , Kuopio , Iisalmi , Kajaani , Kuusamo and Kemijärvi to Sodankylä , where it reunites with state road 4. The European route 63 follows its course between Vehmasmäki near Kuopio and Sodankylä . On a 49 km long section between Vehmasmäki and Siilinjärvi , State Road 5 has been developed as a motorway .

The state highway 5 carries out the following municipalities: Heinola - Pertunmaa - Mäntyharju - Mikkeli - Juva - Joroinen - Varkaus - Leppävirta - Kuopio - Siilinjärvi - Lapinlahti - Iisalmi - Sonkajärvi - Kajaani - Paltamo - Ristijärvi - Hyrynsalmi - Suomussalmi - Kuusamo - ( Posio ) - ( Salla ) - Kemijärvi - Pelkosenniemi - Sodankylä.
