Beverley Naidoo

Beverley Naidoo (born May 21, 1943 in Johannesburg ) is a writer.

In 2003 she won the Japanese Sankei Children's Book Award and the Jane Addams Book Award for her book The Other Truth . In 2006 the sequel Web of Lies appeared in England and the USA . Naidoo is nominated for the Hans Christian Andersen Award by the South African branch of the International Board on Books for Young People 2008.

Life

Beverley Naidoo was born on May 21, 1943 in Johannesburg ( South Africa ). In 1963 she graduated from the University of Witwatersrand . In 1964 she was in solitary confinement for eight weeks because she was an opponent of the apartheid regime and actively participated in the resistance. In 1965 she was expelled from the country. So she decided to emigrate to England, where she studied to become a teacher and later also taught students. She married an exiled South African and was only able to return to South Africa in 1991 because they could not live together in South Africa because "mixed marriages" were forbidden.
