The British Council is a UK non-profit organization dedicated to promoting international relations. Formally independent, it works de facto closely with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office .

history

The organization was founded in 1934 as the British Committee for Relations with Other Countries . The initiative came from Reginald Leeper , who at that time saw the need for "cultural propaganda". The aim of the British Council is to build mutual relationships between people of the United Kingdom and other countries. This happens primarily in the areas of education, culture, science and society. The focus is also on the international dialogue on ideas and innovations from Great Britain. The facility is represented in 109 countries. In Germany the British Council controls its work from Berlin , in Austria it has an office in Viennaand in Switzerland in Bern .

65 percent of the funding comes from our own funds, which are primarily generated through language training courses. Language courses and language tests (for example International English Language Testing System ) are offered worldwide , similar to its German counterpart, the Goethe-Institut . The facility also carries out development aid projects. This made £ 186.2 million available in 2005/2006 . The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is granting aid which was £ 164 million in 2005/2006.
