Juva [ ˈjuʋɑ ] (historically Jukainen, Swedish historically Jockas ) is a municipality with 6,225 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018) in eastern Finland. It is located in the Savo countryside , 40 km east of the town of Mikkeli and 55 km west of Savonlinna on state road 5. Juva is exclusively Finnish-speaking .
Juva has existed as a parish since 1442, making it one of the oldest parishes in Eastern Finland. Originally, the municipality covered large parts of the Savo countryside, including the areas of today's cities of Kuopio and Pieksämäki . As a political municipality in its current form, Juva has existed since 1868.
To this day, Juva is mainly characterized by agriculture and forestry; smaller businesses, including those in the food and paper industries, did not settle there until the 1970s. Many of Juva's residents work in the nearby towns of Savonlinna, Mikkeli, Varkaus and Pieksämäki. Tourism is of increasing importance. In summer, the population rises considerably when Finns move into their summer homes, especially from the country's major cities. In total there are more than 2000 such Mökkis in Juva .
The parish church of Juva was built in 1863 according to plans by Ernst Lohrmann and Carl Albert Edelfelt .
