geography

Birch forest on an island in Hanhijärvi -See

Enonkoski is located in the eastern Finnish landscape of South Savo 32 kilometers north of the city of Savonlinna in the middle of the eastern Finnish lake district . The municipality has an area of 419 square kilometers (113 square kilometers of which is inland water) and is defined by forests and lakes. The only settlement center ( taajama ) is the church village Enonkoski, located on a rapids (Finnish koski ) between the lakes Ylä-Enonvesi and Enonvesi , where 631 people live (as of December 31, 2011). The villages or scattered settlements of Hanhijärvi, Ihamaniemi, Joutsenmäki, Karvila, Laasala, Makkola, Muhola, Paakkunala, Parkumäki, Simanala, Suurimäki and Vuorikoski also belong to Enonkoski .

Due to a strange demarcation, Savonlinna is the only neighboring community of Enonkoski. In 2009, Enonkoski ceded a narrow corridor in the north of his municipality in order to create a connection between Savonlinna and the municipality of Savonranta , which was incorporated into Savonlinna . After the neighboring municipality of Kerimäki to the south was incorporated into Savonlinna in 2013 , Enonkoski is now enclosed on all sides by the administrative urban area of Savonlinna.

history

Enonkoski developed around a sawmill that used the water power of the eponymous rapids. Originally, Enonkoski belonged to the Kerimäki parish . In 1859 the place received its own prayer house . In 1894 Enonkoski was raised to an independent municipality and also received areas of the communities Heinävesi , Rantasalmi and Sääminki .

Attractions

Enonkoski Church

In the former village school of Ihananiemi there is the only Protestant monastery in Finland that can accommodate 12 people, but currently has only one permanent resident, Sister Virva Tyrväinen. The parish church in the parish village of Enonkoski was built in 1886 according to plans by M. Schjerfbeck. Unlike in most Finnish churches, the cross of the steeple is not facing the entrance, but facing Lake Ylä-Enonvesi; In 1858 a church boat sank in a storm on the lake, and twelve people who wanted to go to church in the boat drowned. In the north of the municipality, Enonkoski has a share in the Kolovesi National Park . Of tourist interest is the Hovimäki manor, built in 1854, which today houses a hotel and a restaurant.
