Map of the Kolovesi National Park |
The Kolovesi National Park is a national park in the Finnish region of South Savo and is located in the municipalities of Enonkoski , Heinävesi and Savonranta . Its 23 km² are almost completely covered by several lakes, which are largely filled with large islands.
The national park was established in 1990 to protect the rare Saimaa ringed seal . The long, narrow bays of the islands are ideal retreats for them, in which they can give birth and raise their young undisturbed.
For this reason, with rare exceptions, motorboats in the national park are strictly forbidden, and other boats may only be used to a limited extent in spring. Anyone planning a boat tour in the Kolovesi National Park must find out more about these prohibitions and restrictions, for example at the nearest tourist offices.
The landscape of the Kolovesi National Park is characterized by some rocky banks protruding steeply from the water. In the area of Mount Ukonvuori there are Stone Age rock carvings and a hiking trail to the summit.
