Kerimäki [ ˈkɛrimæki ] is a former municipality in the Finnish countryside of South Savo . Since 2013 it has been part of the city of Savonlinna .

Kerimäki is located 23 kilometers east of the city center of Savonlinna on the west bank of Lake Puruvesi . The former municipality of Kerimäki is rural and has an area of ​​876.5 square kilometers. More than a third of it (318.8 square kilometers) consists of inland waters. The last population of the municipality was 5526 (as of December 31, 2012). There are two settlement centers ( taajama ) in Kerimäki : the church village Kerimäki, in which 2486 people live, and the place Anttola with 293 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011).

Kerimäki Church

Kerimäki was dissolved as an independent parish from Sääminki around 1640 . Originally, the Kerimäki parish also included Savonranta , Enonkoski and Punkaharju , which became independent in 1882, 1894 and 1922, respectively. At the beginning of 2013 Kerimäki was incorporated into the city of Savonlinna together with Punkaharju.

Kerimäki is best known for Kerimäki Church , the largest wooden church in the world. It has 3400 seats; 5000 people can be in the church at the same time. The internal dimensions of the church are 45 m long × 42 m wide × 27 m high. The church, which was completed on September 25, 1847 after three years of construction, was solemnly consecrated on June 11, 1848 (Pentecost). The neoclassical domed church has a cruciform floor plan and is divided into two floors. The free-standing stack of bells rests on a base made of solid masonry.

Kerimäki also houses a freshwater fishing museum, an open-air museum and a fisherman's estate. Kerimäki is on the main route 71 from Savonlinna to Kitee . State road 14 and the railway line from Parikkala via Savonlinna to Pieksämäki run through the southernmost part of the former municipal area . Kerimäki station is served by passenger trains that run between Parikkala and Savonlinna.
