Kitee [ kitɛː ] ( Swedish Kides ) is a town in the Finnish landscape of North Karelia with 10,358 inhabitants (December 31, 2018).

Kitee is located in the eastern Finnish landscape of North Karelia, 68 kilometers south of Joensuu on the border with Russia . Kitee is the southernmost municipality in North Karelia. Neighboring towns and communities are Parikkala in the south, Savonlinna in the west, Rääkkylä in the northwest and Tohmajärvi in the north. In the east lies the state border with Russia ( Republic of Karelia ).
The administrative metropolitan area of Kitee covers an area of 1724.4 square kilometers. More than a quarter of the urban area consists of inland waterways. The largest lakes are the Orivesi in the west, the Puruvesi in the southwest and the Pyhäjärvi in the southeast. The core town of Kitee is on the shores of the smaller Kiteenjärvi Lake.

history
The Kitee area belonged to Novgorod's sphere of influence from the 15th century and was Orthodox . In 1617 it came under Swedish rule in the Peace of Stolbowo . The Evangelical Lutheran parish Kitee was founded in 1630. When war broke out between Sweden and Russia in 1656, the Orthodox population rose against Swedish rule. The uprising was put down and many Orthodox fled to Russia. After the Second World War , the eastern part of Kitee had to be given over to the Soviet Union . Kitee has been a city since 1992. At the beginning of 2013, the neighboring municipality of Kesälahti was incorporated.
Economy and Infrastructure
Kitee's largest employer is a sawmill owned by the timber company Stora Enso . Another well-known corporation based in Kitee is the textile manufacturer Marimekko . In the agricultural sector, Kitee is an important center for milk production . Until the 19th century ships were built in Kitee. Finland's first steamship was built in the Puhos shipyard in 1833.
Kitee is connected to southern Finland by State Road 6 and the Helsinki- Joensuu railway line . There is a waterway from Puhos to the Saimaa lake area and via the Saimaa Canal to the Baltic Sea .
Sports
One of the top teams in Pesäpallo , the Finnish variant of baseball, is the three-time Finnish champion Kiteen Pallo from Kitee.
