Juuka [ ˈjuːkɑ ] ( Swedish historical Juga ) is a municipality in eastern Finland with 4709 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018). It is located in the North Karelia landscape on the west bank of Lake Pielinen . The closest cities are Nurmes approx. 35 km in the north, Lieksa approx. 40 km in the east on the other side of the Pielinen and Joensuu approx. 75 km in the south.
In Kirchdorf of Juuka about 3200 people live. Juuka is one of the few places in Eastern Finland where the old wooden buildings have been preserved. The old center of the church village is called Puu-Juuka ("Wooden Juuka") and, with its wooden houses, some of which are over 100 years old, is a culturally and historically valuable ensemble. The landscape of Juuka is characterized by hills ( vaara ) and the Pielinen lake. The Paalasmaa archipelago, the highest point of which rises almost 130 meters above the surrounding Pielinen, is located in the municipality of Juuka.
The quarrying of soapstone , a soft rock from which, among other things, elements for furnace construction are made, near Nunnanlahti in Juuka, is the municipality's most important industry. The soapstone industry employs a total of 550 people. There is a soapstone museum in Nunnanlahti.
