Lake Pielinen [ ˈpiɛlinɛn ] ( also Pielisjärvi in Finnish ), located in the very east of Finland , is the fifth largest lake in the country with 894.2 km².
It is around 93 km long and at its widest point around 28 km wide. There are around 2000 islands in the Pielinen. The most important tributary, the Lieksanjoki , flows into the Pielinen at Lieksa on the east bank of the lake. The Pielisjoki drains the lake to the southern Pyhäselkä , which is part of the Saimaa lake system.
On the west bank is the well-known Koli National Park with the mountain Koli of the same name , from which you can enjoy a delightful view over the lake. The idyllic small town of Nurmes is located on the northern tip and the town of Lieksa on the east bank .
The asteroid (1536) Pielinen , discovered on September 18, 1939, is named after the lake.
