Pielisjoki is a 67 km long river in the east of Finland .
It is the largest tributary of the Saimaa lake system. The river connects the two largest lakes in the landscape of North Karelia , Pielinen and Pyhäselkä . The city of Joensuu lies at its confluence with the Pyhäselkä .
The Pielisjoki was formed after the last ice age when the Uimaharju - Os broke under the pressure of the water of the Pielinen. The cause was a postglacial land uplift , which led to a change in the direction of the river Pielinen, which was previously drained to the north.
Ten locks were built along the river in the late 19th century. In the 1950s and 1960s, two hydropower plants were built on Pielisjoki: Kaltimo (24 MW, 10 m head) and Kuurna (18 MW, 6.9 m head). At the same time, new canals were built to replace the old shipping route. The lock at Kaltimo has the largest height difference in Finland at 9 m.
The Pielisjoki leaves the Pielinen at its southern end. It then flows through the two lakes Rukavesi and Rahkeenvesi . In the latter, the Koitajoki meets the Pielisjoki coming from the left. 2 km further downstream, most of the water from the Koitajoki flows into the Pielisjoki. This was previously diverted to the Pamilo hydropower plant to the southeast . A few kilometers further, the Pielisjoki passes the town of Eno and continues its course to Joensuu.
