Vuoksi Dam near Imatra (1982) |
The Vuoksi - the Finnish form of the name, the Russian is Вуокса ( Wuoksa ) - is a river in Finland and Russia that drains the Saimaa lake system. In doing so, it cuts through the first Salpausselkä ridge and flows to Lake Ladoga to the east . The small towns of Imatra and Svetogorsk lie along its course .
The Vuoksi flows through typically Scandinavian dammings, with the lake and riverbed sections alternating. The catchment area covers 68,500 km², of which 52,697 km² are in Finland. A larger tributary of the Vuoksi is the Woltschja , which flows from the right at Lossewo .
Historical river course
Until 1857 the Vuoksi made a curve to the north near Lossewo, flowed through the Vuoksisee and then flowed into the Ladoga lake at Priosersk ( ⊙ ). With the construction of a drainage ditch on Lake Suchodolskoje , a new southern branch of the Vuoksi was created, which leads through this 40 km long lake and its new drain to Lake Ladoga. As a result, the water level in the old north arm sank sharply, so that today it is separated from the rest of the river for most of the time. The Ilmenjoki flows into this original river course at Priosersk .
Energy generation
Both neighbors, Finland and Russia, use the Vuoksi to generate energy. The famous Imatrafall was converted to generate energy, the 18.4 m high falls have been used to generate electricity by diverting the water since 1928 . Only from midsummer to mid-August can the water run in the old river bed for 20 minutes every day by opening the lock gates from 6:00 p.m. Then the visitor can view the falls from an arched bridge or a park below. Jean Sibelius will also play the piece Es kocht der Strom by Jean Sibelius .
The luxurious Imatran Valtionhotelli , an Art Nouveau hotel , stands by the river .
