The Saimaa (also Etelä-Saimaa , Finnish for "South Saimaa") is a lake in the landscapes of South Karelia and South Savo in southeastern Finland .
The lake forms the lowest and southernmost part of the Saimaa lake system of the same name . It has an area of 1377.03 km², making it the largest lake in Finland. It lies at a height of 75.7 m.
The northern Pihlajavesi lake is connected to the Saimaa.
Along its southeastern shore run the first Salpausselkä - moraine and the State Straße 6 . The second ridge of the Salpausselkä runs a few kilometers to the north and is cut by Lake Saimaa.
The Saimaa is drained from Vuoksi to Lake Ladoga in Russia . The Saimaa Canal connects the Saimaa directly with the Gulf of Finland .
The towns of Lappeenranta , Joutseno and Imatra are on the south-eastern shore of the lake.
