The Haukivesi [ ˈhɑu̯kivɛsi ] is a lake on the northwest edge of the Saimaa lake system in the Finnish region of Savo . With an area of 562 km², it is the eighth largest lake in Finland. Numerous sounds and islands divide the Haukivesi into several basins and bays. The most important of these are Siitinselkä, Saviluoto, Tahkoselkä, Vuoriselkä, Kuokanselkä, Kuivaselkä, Heposelkä, Peonselkä, Tuunaanselkä, Hiekonselkä, Varparannanselkä and Iso-Haukivesi. The greatest extent of the Haukivesi between the Siitinselkä lake areas in the north near Varkaus and Haapavesi in the south near Savonlinna is about 80 km.
Lake Unnukka to the north flows over the rapids from Varkaus and over the Taipale Canal to Haukivesi.
The northeastern Joutenvesi is separated from the Haukivesi by the isthmus of Oravi . Only in the extreme north of the isthmus is there a natural runoff. In addition, the two shipping canals, the Haponlahti and Oravi canals, cut through the isthmus.
To the south of Pihlajavesi the Haukivesi flows over the Sound of Savonlinna .
In Haukivesi there is the Linnansaari National Park , which includes several hundred smaller islands and rocks in addition to the eponymous island of Linnansaari. The national park is home to a population of the threatened Saimaa ringed seal .
