James Silas

James Edward Silas (born February 11, 1949 in Tallulah , Louisiana ) is a retired American basketball player . He played in the guard position. He spent most of his career with the San Antonio Spurs in the ABA and the NBA .

Player career

James Silas played at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches ( Texas ) College Basketball. In his final season ( senior ) he averaged 30.7 points per game and led the school to a 29: 1 record.

Silas was drafted in the 1972 NBA draft in the fifth round of the Houston Rockets , but was sacked by them before the start of the 1972-73 season. In November 1972 he then signed a contract with the Dallas Chaparrals in the American Basketball Association (ABA), where he was elected to the ABA All- Rookie Team after the 1972–73 season . In 1973 the Chaparrals were sold and were then called San Antonio Spurs .

His best season in the ABA was 1975-76, in which he scored 23.8 points, 4.0 rebounds and 5.4 assists for the Spurs.

Silas was nominated twice for the ABA All-Star Game (1975 and 1976). He was also elected to the All-ABA Second Team in 1975 and to the All-ABA First Team in 1976.

In 1976, the ABA's game operations were stopped and the Spurs switched to the NBA. There Silas played for San Antonio for five more years. In 1981 he moved to the Cleveland Cavaliers , for whom he played one more season before retiring from active sports.

On February 28, 1984, James Silas' jersey number (13) was the first number ever to be retired by the San Antonio Spurs . H. this number is no longer given to other players.
