Oravi

Oravi [ ˈorɑvi ] is a village with about 100 inhabitants in the Finnish countryside of South Savo . It is located in the middle of the Finnish Lake District on an isthmus between the lakes Haukivesi and Joutenvesi . Oravi belongs administratively to the city of Savonlinna and is located 42 kilometers northwest of the city center. The place is of touristic importance: there is a supermarket, restaurant and boat rental with boat filling station, as well as the Oravin Melontakeskus hostel . The Linnansaari National Park can also be reached from Oravi.

The Oravi Canal, 237 meters long and 2.7 meters deep, runs through the center of Oravi. It connects the lakes Haukivesi and Jountunvesi and was replaced in the 1960s by the Haponlahtikanal not far to the southeast .

Oravi originally belonged to the Rantasalmi municipality . Before Oravi was connected to the road network, the church village of Rantasalmi, 17 kilometers as the crow flies on the other bank of the Haukivesi, was the easiest place to reach by water. The road from Heinävesi via Oravi to Savonlinna was built between 1854 and 1858 . This made the connection to Savonlinna stronger than that to Rantasalmi. In 1968 the area around Oravi of the municipality of Sääminki , which included the area around the city of Savonlinna, was added. In 1973 Sääminki was again incorporated into Savonlinna.
