Taipalsaari [ ˈtɑi̯pɑlsɑːri ] is a municipality in eastern Finland with a population of 4,715 (as of December 31, 2018). It is located in the South Karelia landscape in the Saimaa lake area 14 kilometers northwest of the city of Lappeenranta .
Location and history
The Saimaa Lake plays an important role for Taipalsaari. More than half of the community area is water, the lakes in the Taipalsaari area have a total of about 700 islands and the total length of their shores is 1008 kilometers. In the past, the main way of getting around the community was by boat. The steamship in the coat of arms of the municipality commemorates the navigation on Lake Saimaa. Today Taipalsaari is connected to Lappeenranta by a scenic causeway. In addition, fishing has traditionally been an important source of income in Taipalsaari, so fish soup is a local specialty. A population of the rare Saimaa ringed seals also lives in the area of the municipality . Especially in summer Taipalsaari is a popular holiday destination with its 3200 holiday homes .
Half of the working population of the municipality work in Lappeenranta. Taipalsaari benefits from its proximity to the city: an above-average number of families with children live in the community and the population is increasing by an average of 40 people per year.
Taipalsaari is twinned with Kungsbacka in Sweden , Nannestad in Norway and Aalestrup in Denmark .
