Rautjärvi [ ˈrɑu̯tjærvi ] is a municipality in southeastern Finland . It is in the countryside of South Karelia on the border with Russia . Around half of the 3335 residents (as of December 31, 2018) live in the Simpele community center. The second larger settlement is Rautjärven Asemaseutu with 800 inhabitants. The municipal area also includes the villages of Innasennurkka, Kaljusenkylä, Laikko, Miettilä, Niskapietilä and Änkilä. Rautjärvi is one of the most industrialized municipalities in Finland. The largest employer in the municipality is a paper mill belonging to the M-real group in Simpele.

Rautjärvi has been an independent municipality since 1666. When Finland had to surrender its eastern territories to the Soviet Union after the Second World War , the newly drawn border ran through Rautjärvi. 40% of the municipal area remained on the Soviet side. Today's municipality Rautjärvi was created in 1973 through the merger of the previous municipalities Rautjärvi and Simpele.

The sniper Simo Häyhä (1905-2002) was born in Rautjärvi, the cross-country skiers Marja-Liisa and Harri Kirvesniemi were born in Simpele.
