Ruokolahti [ ˈruɔkɔlɑhti ] ( Swedish historically Ruokolax ) is a municipality in southeastern Finland with 5099 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018). It is in the countryside of South Karelia on the Saimaa Lake. In total there are over 500 lakes in the Ruokolahti area. This makes Ruokolahti a popular location for vacation homes . In the summer, the number of inhabitants doubles due to the number of holiday guests.

About 20 km away is Imatra , one of the border crossings to Russia .

history

Ruokolahti was already inhabited between 4,000 and 5,000 years ago. Rock carvings on the Kolmiköytinen hill are evidence of this. In 1572 Ruokolahti became an independent parish from during the Russian period was today's municipality 1,862th Today's church in the village was built in 1854 on the Kirkkomäki hill according to plans by Ernst Lohrmann . One of the most famous works by the painter Albert Edelfelt is “Old Women from Ruokolahti on the Church Hill” (1887).

Culture

Another attraction are the Kutvele, Käyhkää and Kukonharju canals, which were built by Russian soldiers in the 18th century.

In 1992, Ruokolahti caused a sensation across Finland when a lion was allegedly spotted in the forest . The truth of the matter has not yet been clarified when a possible explanation was put forward that it was a lion that broke out of a Russian circus . In the media summer slump , the incident met with a huge response. The lion is still the mascot of Ruokolahti today.
