Lemi [ ˈlɛmi ] ( Swedish historical: Klemis ) is a municipality in eastern Finland with 3043 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018). It is located in the South Karelia countryside , around 20 kilometers west of the city of Lappeenranta . The other neighboring communities are Luumäki , Savitaipale and Taipalsaari . The Lemi Community Center is located on the shores of Lake Kivijärvi .
Lemi originally belonged to the Taipalsaari parish . Construction of the first church in Lemi began in 1668, but before the church could be consecrated, it was arson two years later. In 1688 a new church was built and Lemi became its own chapel community . The current church, a wooden cruciform church , dates from 1786. Lemi has been an independent parish since 1806, the political community has existed since 1867.
Lemi is known for the traditional culinary specialty särä , a dish made from potatoes and lamb.
