Luumäki [ ˈluːmæki ] is a municipality in eastern Finland with 4662 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018). It is located on Lake Kivijärvi (in German Steinsee) in the South Karelia countryside , 37 kilometers southwest of the city of Lappeenranta . The main town of the municipality is Taavetti, which was built around the Davydovskaya fortress founded by Tsarina Catherine II in 1773.
The state highway 6 of Pernå into Northern Finland Kajaani crosses Luumäki. Sights of the community include the Kotkaniemi House, in which the former Finnish President Pehr Evind Svinhufvud lived for a long time, defensive positions of the Salpalinja Line from World War II and the church built by Carl Ludwig Engel in 1845 . The lakes in the municipality have a total area of 110 square kilometers, the total length of their banks is 800 kilometers. There are around 3000 holiday homes in Luumäki .
