Typical idyll: the red painted holiday home

A Mökki ( Finnish: mökki "hut") is a typical Finnish holiday home .

It is usually made of wood and equipped with a sauna . Traditional Mökkis are built in block construction, are very simple and lack any comfort . They are mostly only inhabited in summer. Nowadays, however, luxurious Mökkis are also being built, which are habitable all year round. A Mökki is used by Finns to relax, especially on weekends and during the summer holidays. Most of the Mökkis are built at a sufficiently large distance from their neighbors. Often the huts are on the banks of a lake. For a number of years there have been mandatory minimum distances to the lake shore in order to keep water pollution within limits.
