Ocean Girl is a 78-part Australian youth series that was filmed from 1994 to 1997.
The plot
The series takes place primarily on ORCA (Oceanic Research Center Australia), a marine research station on the Great Barrier Reef . In the first episodes, Jason and Brett, the sons of a marine biologist working for ORCA , meet Neri, who lives on a nearby island. It later turns out that she is an alien who was the only one who survived the crash of her spaceship with her father. Her father died a few years later, and Neri has lived alone on the island ever since.
Between this extraordinary girl, who can communicate with humpback whales and can dive faster, deeper and longer than any normal person, and the company UBRI (Underwater Biological Research Institute) there is a conflict in the first season. UBRI, led by scientist Dr. Hellegren, holds Neri's friend and constant companion, the humpback whale Charly , captive for research purposes. Jason, Brett, and other initiated youth from ORCA team up to rescue the humpback whale with Neri's help.
In the second season, Neri's sister Mera appears. It was shot down with a capsule shortly before the crash of the spaceship and thus saved. She was found by people on a beach, after problems with various foster families, she lives in a school for the gifted. When Jason, Brett and Neri find out, UBRI is already on the way to pick up Mera. This season, Neri and Mera's extraterrestrial origins are revealed; in the end, an attempted takeover of ORCA by UBRI spies is prevented.
In the third season, the boy Kal, who also comes from Neri's planet, appears in the spaceship under Neri's island. You wake him up from an artificial deep sleep. His mental level is still on the same level as he was put to sleep as a young boy, but his body has matured into that of an adult. An enigmatic item called the Synchronium is introduced, which turns out to be from the Planet of the Oceans and is the only way to save the ocean and, by extension, the whole world. Neri and her friends have to prevent the Synchronium UBRI from falling into their hands because Dr. Hellegren already has plans how to use it to rule the whole world. He also tries to incite Kal against the children and Neri.
In the last season two new threats emerge: PRAXIS, an organization for alien research, and a troop of combat-ready people from the planet of the oceans , armed with state-of-the-art weapons and following the orders of Princess Shersheba and Professor Malakat. These two Ozeans want to subjugate the entire earth. Since the planet of the oceans is endangered by a red plague (a poisonous alga), they want to find a new home on earth. It turns out that Neris and Mera's mother (the rightful queen over the planet of the oceans) is still alive and imprisoned in an artificial coma. The plague is also being released on Earth. In the end, an antidote will be found and both planets will be saved. Neri's mother is freed. Neri and Mera are now supposed to return to their home planet to rule with their mother. That hits Jason and Neri very much, because they fell in love. After all, Neri remains on earth to act as an ambassador for the planet of the oceans.

Broadcast in Germany
Ocean Girl was first seen in Germany at the beginning of 1996 on ZDF , broadcast in two-channel sound (German and English). In the following years, the series was broadcast several times on ZDF and on the children's channel (later "KI.KA"), the last time at the end of 2002. However, since ZDF no longer has the broadcasting rights, the series has not been broadcast on German television since then.
DVDs
The first season of the series was released on DVD on November 7, 2005 in Australia . This was followed by the second season in March 2007, the third season on June 30, 2008 and the fourth season on June 26, 2009.
A German version of the first two seasons was released on May 19, 2014, followed by the third season on August 18, before the fourth season, released on November 10, complemented the series on DVD. Since May 18, 2015, all three boxes have also been available in the form of a complete edition.
Offshoot
Under the title Ocean Girl - Princess of the Seas (The New Adventures of Ocean Girl), a total of 26-part cartoon series was created in 2000 and 2001, but the content has little in common with the original series. In Germany this format ran several times on Super RTL and since 2008 also on the pay TV channel KidsCo .
In August 2019, the first 13 episodes were first released on DVD box by Pidax Film. In addition to the German version, it also contains the English soundtrack. The second box with the remaining 13 episodes was released on October 25, 2019.
