TV series especially aimed at young people are mostly about a group of young people and their slow growth. Concentrating on this youth group means that the consequences are mostly age-related problems such as love, friendship, school, training, self-discovery, pressure to adapt or puberty . The target group is mostly the same age as the characters and gets older with them.

Once there were earlier series in which mainly occurred young people (like the one in the 1960s playing -Jahren Happy Days (1974-1984) with the future director Ron Howard ), they were again very popular with Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990-2000 ) and Melrose Place (1992-1999). Other series included Heartbreak High (Australia, 1994–1999), Party of Five (with Neve Campbell and Jennifer Love Hewitt ), Dawson's Creek (with James van der Beek ) and One Tree Hill (2003–2012, with Chad Michael Murray ). The most successful German youth series of recent times was Berlin, Berlin with Felicitas Woll .

Some series mix elements of youth series with other genres, such as fantasy ( Smallville ), horror ( Buffy - The Vampire Slayer ) or crime stories ( Veronica Mars ).

It is rather rare that the young actors also have success as adults in the cinema with leading roles after the series has ended . Two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank , for example, got out after half a season at Beverly Hills, 90210 because she was not attractive enough to the young audience (and the producers). Michelle Williams of Dawson's Creek was nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in Brokeback Mountain . Claire Danes had already played the lead role in Welcome to Life in the mid-1990s . At a school that played detective series 21 Jump Street , with Johnny Depp as undercover -Polizist for Teen - Star unwillingly became.
