Jarno Kultanen (born January 8, 1973 in Luumäki ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player and current coach , who played for the Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League from 1991 to 2010 . Since 2011 he has been an assistant trainer at KooKoo in the Mestis .
Career
Jarno Kultanen began his career as a hockey player at KooKoo , for whose professional team he was active from 1991 to 1994 in what was then the second class I divisioona. The defender then played for KalPa Kuopio in the SM-liiga for two years and for four years for their league rivals HIFK Helsinki , with whom he won the Finnish championship title in the 1997/98 season . In the 2000 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in the sixth round as a total of 174 players by the Boston Bruins , for whom he scored two goals in 62 games and made eight assists in his rookie year , the 2000/01 season . After he played exclusively for Boston in the following season , but only played 38 games due to a knee injury, he joined in the 2002/03 season to a large extent for Boston's farm team Providence Bruins in the American Hockey League . He was only twice on the ice for the Boston NHL team.
After losing his regular place in the NHL, Kultanen returned to his ex-club HIFK Helsinki, for which he was active in the SM-liiga for two years. From 2005 to 2007 he was then under contract with Mora IK in the Swedish Elitserien . For Sweden he was team captain in the 2006/07 season . After a year as assistant captain at Mora's league rivals Södertälje SK , Kultanen ended his career at his hometown club KooKoo from the second division, the Mestis . The 2008/09 season he ended in the meantime with the Espoo Blues in the SM-liiga. In the 2010/11 season, the former NHL player was head coach of the U20 juniors of his home club KooKoo. For the following season he was promoted to assistant coach of the first team with game operations in the Mestis and assists head coach Ismo Lehkonen there .
