Mestis
Mestis is the second highest Finnish ice hockey league . It was founded in 2000 and replaced the first division. At the same time, it became the highest league that could be achieved through pure playful performance, since the SM-liiga was "closed", which in ice hockey means that there is no more promotion and relegation. However, this does not mean that new teams will no longer be accepted. The Mestis teams must first achieve special standards in order to be transferred to the SM-liiga. It was only opened again in the 2009/10 league. The 14th of the SM-lliga plays in a best-of-7 series against the master of the Mestis to stay or rise to the SM-liiga.
There are currently 13 teams playing in the league.
