Keuruu [ ˈkeu̯ruː ] is a town with 9762 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018) in central Finland . It is located 50 kilometers west of the city of Jyväskylä .
Around 8,000 people live in the city center. It extends over four islands connected by bridges on the north shore of Lake Keurusselkä . In addition, the town of Pihlajavesi, which was incorporated in 1969, and the scattered settlements of Ampiala, Jukojärvi, Kivijärvi, Liesjärvi, Loila, Pohjoislahti, Suojärvi, Suolahti and Valkealahti belong to the city. The station village of Haapamäki is the starting point of three railway lines (to Jyväskylä in the south, Seinäjoki in the west and Iisalmi in the east) and is therefore of some importance as a transfer station in the Finnish rail network.
The area around Keuruu was permanently settled from around 1560, and it was subsequently divided between the parishes of Pirkkala and Ruovesi. Keuruu has been an independent parish since 1628, and has had town charter since 1986.
The old wooden church of Keuruu was built by Antti Hakola in 1756–59, but has been out of use since the new brick church was consecrated in 1892.
politics
The strongest party in Keuruu is the Center Party with eleven out of 35 seats on the local council, the highest decision-making body on local affairs, closely followed by the Social Democrats with ten seats. Finland's third big party, the National Collection Party , is also quite strong with six MPs. The Christian Democrats are still represented on the city council with three, the right-wing populist True Finns with two, and the Left Alliance and the Green Alliance with one seat each. A local electoral list also won a mandate ( Keuruun Sitoutumattomien Kunnallisjärjestö ry: n yhteislista ).
