Kivijärvi [ ˈkiʋiˌjærʋi ] is a municipality with 1103 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018) in central Finland . It is located 130 northwest of Jyväskylä on the northern edge of the Finnish Lake District .

The area was permanently settled in the 16th century, starting from Savo in Eastern Finland. Kivijärvi has existed as a political municipality since 1868. The modest parish church in the parish of Kivijärvi was built in 1874.

The parish village forms the population center of the community. It is located on a bay on the west bank of the eponymous lake Kivijärvi , which runs through the municipality over a length of 30 km from north to south. The municipality also includes the widely scattered villages Lokakylä, Karstula, Vastinki, Kumpulainen, Sompala, Kinnula, Saarensalmi, Keihärinkoski and Valkeisjärvi. In the summer months, the population of the community increases significantly when Finns move into their holiday homes, especially from the country's major cities. There are 650 such Mökkis on the banks of the Kivijärvi alone .

Kivijärvi is rural. Around a third of the workforce works in agriculture and forestry, the largest employer is the local government. Kivijärvi has an airfield with a 900 m long runway, which is mainly used by glider pilots. In the northeast, the municipality has a share in the Salamajärvi National Park, where forest reindeer can be seen, among other things .
