Multia [ ˈmultiɑ ] ( Swedish historical: Muldia ) is a municipality with 1584 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018) in central Finland .

geography

Multia is located in the west of the Central Finland landscape , 63 kilometers northwest of Jyväskylä . Neighboring cities and municipalities are Saarijärvi in the northeast, Uurainen in the east, Petäjävesi in the southeast, Keuruu in the south and Ähtäri in the west.

The district of Multia has an area of 766 square kilometers, but with a population density of 2.7 inhabitants per square kilometer, it is very sparsely populated, even by Finnish standards. The center of the municipality is the parish village Multia, which is located on an isthmus between the lakes Multianjärvi and Syvänti . The municipality also includes the villages Isojärvi-Kopola, Karhila, Linna-Peurala, Nikaranperä, Sahrajärvi, Tarhapää, Väätäiskylä and Vehkoo.

Multia is located on the Suomenselkä , the watershed that separates the lake district of central Finland from the plains of southern Ostrobothnia . In the area of the municipality, this extensive terminal moraine series reaches its highest point in Kiiskilänmäki, at 269 meters above sea level, and also the highest point in Central Finland. Other notable elevations are the Tervavuori (264 meters) and the Kulhanvuori (260 meters). The sparsely populated landscape of Suomenselkä is very attractive with its numerous hills, lakes and watercourses and still quite primeval forests and swamps.

history

Administratively, Multia originally belonged to the vast parish of Ruovesi . In 1627 the area of Multia became part of the parish Keuruu, which was detached from Ruovesi. In 1795, Multia split from Keuruu and became a chapel parish in 1831. In 1868 the place was converted into a political municipality in the course of the reorganization of the municipal constitutions.

The population of Multias is constantly decreasing due to the migration to the growth centers of Finland. In 1926 the population was 4,228, but in 2006 it fell below the 2,000 mark for the first time.

The coat of arms of Multia shows a yellow ant in the black field. The coat of arms was designed by Ahti Hammar in 1963 and is derived from the nickname keltiäiset (" yellow meadow ants "), which the residents of the neighboring municipality of Keuruu gave the residents of Multia.

Economy and Infrastructure

Multia's main natural resource is its forests, and so forestry also feeds a large proportion of the community's population. 20 percent of the working population are employed in the agriculture and forestry sector, and a further 24 percent are employed in further processing. 56 percent work in the service sector. A third of the residents of Multia work outside the community.

Multia is at the intersection of State Road 18 from Jyväskylä to Vaasa and Main Road 58 from Kangasala to Kärsämäki . These unite in the community center of Multia and follow the same route for about 20 kilometers before they separate again at the village of Väätäiskylä. Multia is connected to the neighboring municipality of Uurainen to the east by road 627. Multia is not connected to the rail network; the nearest train station is in the southern neighboring community of Keuruu.

Culture and sights

The stately wooden church of the place was built in 1796–98 according to plans by Matti Åkergren as a towerless cruciform church; In 1846 it was converted into a long church and the bell tower was built on the east side. In the churchyard there is an old cemetery and the wooden parish building from 1819. The Multia Museum of Local History has been housed in a former granary since 1957, and the only mill museum in Central Finland in the historic Uitamonkoski mill.

However, the actual sights of Multia are more to be found in nature. In 2004, a 20 m high wooden observation tower was built on the Kiiskilänmäki, which allows a far-reaching view of the scenic surrounding area, which is also accessible through several designated nature trails.

Since 1988, Multia has hosted the world championships in kick sledding every year.
