Kuhmoinen is a municipality with 2238 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018) in central Finland . It is located about halfway between the large cities of Jyväskylä and Lahti on the west bank of Lake Päijänne .

In addition to the parish village of Kuhmoinen, the municipality includes the villages of Äkämäki, Anttula, Harmoinen, Kaukola, Leppäkoski, Lästilä, Närvä, Pihlajakoski, Pihlajalahti, Puukkoinen, Päijälä, Rasi, Ruolahti, Sappee, Suurijeai, Tapialaalki.

In addition to the Päijänne, there are 160 smaller lakes in the municipality; the picturesque landscape inspired painters of Finnish national romanticism such as Pekka Halonen, Kalle Löytänä, Marcus Collin and Väinö Hämäläinen especially around 1900. The 19 km² Isojärvi National Park is located in the south of the municipality and was established in 1982.
history
Kuhmoinen has been settled since the Stone Age, stone carvings in the village of Lästilä that were only discovered in 1992 are estimated to be 6,000 years old. Medieval artifacts have been found on the island of Papinsaari, including an amulet known as the "cocks of cow moines " ( cow Moist kukot ), possibly of Byzantine origin.
Attractions
The parish church of Kuhmoinen is a simple wooden cruciform church with a free-standing bell tower and was built in 1784–85 according to plans by Matti Åkerblom. The appearance of the church village and the other settlements is today largely characterized by new buildings. The path village of Päijälä is an exception , most of whose wooden houses date from the 19th century. The Huhtalan talo farm in Isojärvi National Park was built in the early 17th century.
politics
In Kuhmoinen, the conservative National Collection Party is the strongest political force. In the 2008 local elections, it surpassed the previously dominant Center Party , received over a third of the votes and has 8 out of 21 members of the local council, the highest decision-making body in local matters. The Center Party received only 30.9% of the vote and seven seats after a large loss of votes. The third largest group is made up of the Social Democrats with five seats, while the Christian Democrats won a mandate .
