Laukaa [ ˈlɑu̯kɑː ] ( Swedish Laucas ) is a municipality in Finland with 18,927 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018). It is in the countryside of Central Finland 22 km north-east of Jyväskylä . Neighboring communities are Äänekoski in the north, Konnevesi in the northeast, Hankasalmi in the east, Toivakka in the south, Jyväskylä in the southwest and Uurainen in the west.
The parish of Laukaa was founded in 1593, making it one of the oldest in central Finland. Large parts of the neighboring communities originally belonged to the parish. State roads 4 ( E 75 ), 9 ( E 63 ) and 13 and the railway line between Pieksämäki and Haapajärvi intersect in Laukaa . The municipality benefits from its proximity to Jyväskylä, the largest city in the region, and has had a positive population development for years.
Laukaa's best-known sons are the four-time rally world champion Juha Kankkunen and the communist politician Otto Wille Kuusinen . Laukaa has municipal partnerships with Modum in Norway, Östra Göinge in Sweden, Vallø in Denmark, Pereslavl-Saleskij in Russia and Rõngu in Estonia.

As in most rural areas in Finland, the Center Party is the strongest party in Laukaa . In the 2008 local elections she received over a third of the vote. In the municipal council, the highest decision-making body in local affairs, it has 16 of 43 members. The second largest group is the Social Democrats with nine seats, followed by the conservative National Assembly Party with seven. The left-wing alliance won five mandates, two each for right-wing populist grassroots and the Green Bund .
