The Ahlener Zeitung (AZ) is a regional daily newspaper that appears in Ahlen and was founded in 1898 as the Ahlener Volkszeitung (AV) . Aschendorff Medien GmbH & Co. KG has been the publisher of the Ahlener Zeitung since January 1, 2010 , to which the Westfälische Nachrichten in the Münsterland newspaper group (ZGM) also belongs. Until December 31, 2009, Everhard Sommer was the publisher of the Ahlener Zeitung.

The sold circulation is 5114 copies, a decrease of 37.9 percent since 1998.

history

The first edition of the Ahlener Volkszeitung appeared on March 31, 1898 by Verlag von Büttgen und Hölters, initially three times a week (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays) and concentrated mainly on the local area around Ahlen in the Münsterland. In 1900 Everhard Sommer, who had meanwhile expanded his Ahlen paper and stationery business into a newspaper publisher, bought the Ahlener Volkszeitung von Büttgen und Hölters. This takeover caused the circulation and distribution to increase rapidly. In 1901 there were already more than 1,000 subscribers, and since 1909 the AV has been published daily from Monday to Saturday.

In 1922, the Ahlener Verlag Sommer merged with 15 other regional publishers to form the newspaper publishing company Nordwestdeutschland (ZENO), the forerunner of today's Münsterland newspaper group (ZGM) .

After 1945

After the publisher's founder Everhard Sommer died in 1944, his sons Josef and Bernhard took over the management. They were faced with a difficult task, because after the end of the Second World War the AV, like almost all local newspapers, was banned by the British occupiers. Only on September 1, 1949 did the publishing house get its license back. The newspaper was distributed under the title Westfälische Nachrichten - Neue Ahlener Volkszeitung until October 29, 1949 , when the old name was reverted to. At the same time, the publishing house remained in the hands of the Sommer family, who managed the rebuilding of the publishing house and AV. In the 1970s, Josef Sommer's son-in-law Helmut Röer took over the management of the publishing house. After his death in 1998, the management, now in the fourth generation, passed to his son Volker Röer. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary, the Ahlener Volkszeitung was renamed the Ahlener Zeitung on January 1st, 1998 .

today

In 2004 the Münster-based Aschendorff-Verlag bought the Sommer publishing house and integrated the Ahlener Zeitung into the main edition of the Westfälische Nachrichten . The AZ is printed in the Aschendorff printing center in Münster . The publishing house and the office of the Ahlener Zeitung have been located in the premises of the former Sommer print shop on the Ostenmauer since 1995. The editor is headed by Peter Harke. On January 1, 2010, the function of publisher and editor was also transferred from Verlag E. Sommer to Aschendorff Medien GmbH & Co. KG. The Ahlener Zeitung has been published under the title Westfälische Nachrichten - Zeitung für Ahlen, Dolberg, Vorhelm since January 1, 2017. Only the local pages still carry the title Ahlener Zeitung. This is therefore a header of the WN.

reporting

The content of the Ahlener Zeitung mainly focuses on the local reporting from Ahlen and the districts. News pages from Beckum , Hamm and Münster also appear daily . The local sports editorial office, which reports on local sporting events, is also located in the Ahlen publishing house. The supraregional reporting is done by the central editorial office of the Westfälische Nachrichten in Münster. In addition to the print edition, the Ahlener Zeitung is also present on the Internet, where a selection of the articles published can be read every day. The editorial team and the publishing house of the AZ Sunday newspaper "Blickpunkt" are also located under the umbrella of the publishing house

distribution

The Ahlener Zeitung continues to be distributed via the classic subscription channel. The majority of all reader households relate to the newspaper in this way. The subscription newspapers are delivered to all readers by the publisher's delivery staff by 6 a.m. AZ currently employs around 40 newspaper deliverers for this task. Outside the city of Ahlen, the newspaper can also be obtained from the post office. Within the distribution area of the Westfälische Nachrichten , delivery is carried out by the local deliverer.
