Hankasalmi [ ˈhɑŋkɑˌsɑlmi ] is a municipality in the Central Finland region in western Finland . It has 4939 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018) and is located around 50 km east of Jyväskylä in the middle of the Finnish Lake District .
Villages
Around 1,700 of the municipality's 4,939 residents live in the eponymous church village of Hankasalmi, which also houses the municipal administration. The second settlement center, the “station village” ( Asema ) on the Jyväskylä – Pieksämäki railway line , around 6 km south of the center, is about as large . The village of Niemisjärvi has around 700 inhabitants, the remaining inhabitants of the municipality are divided between the villages of Armisvesi, Kallioaho, Kankainen, Kärkkäälä, Murtoinen, Ristimäki, Sauvamäki, Säkinmäki and Venekoski.

Municipal council
As in most rural areas in Finland, the Center Party is the strongest party in Hankasalmi . In the local election on April 9, 2017, she received 45.4% of the vote. In the municipal council, the highest decision-making body in local affairs, it has 13 of 27 members. It is followed by the Social Democrats and the Left Alliance , each with four seats. The right-wing populist " True Finns " with three MPs as well as the conservative National Collection Party , the Green Bund and the Christian Democrats with one seat each are represented in the municipal council . The term of office began on January 1, 2018 and ends on December 31, 2021.

coat of arms
The municipal coat of arms was designed by Ahti Hammar and has been in use since 1957. It shows a silver wavy band in black, inside a red birch oarlock . The colors indicate Hankasalmi's location on the border between two historical landscapes : the black stands for the Savo landscape , the red indicates Häme .
