Kyyjärvi is a Finnish municipality with 1343 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018).

geography

Kyyjärvi is located in the northeast of the Central Finland landscape in the area of the sparsely populated Suomenselkä moraine ridge. The relief is hilly and reaches heights of up to 231 meters above sea level . Large parts of the municipal area are swampy and still in a fairly natural state. The Aapamoore Pohjoisneva, Saarisuo, Valleussuo, Löytösuo, Hirvilampi and Peuralamminneva are designated as nature reserves under the Natura 2000 system. They are the habitat of numerous rare plant and animal species, including wolf , brown bear , lynx , otter and wood reindeer .

The largest lake in the municipality is the eponymous Kyyjärvi ("Kreuzottersee") with an area of 16.34 square kilometers . The church village of Kyyjärvi is also located on its south bank . The village is important as the intersection of Finnish state roads 13 ( Kokkola - Jyväskylä ) and 17 ( Ylistaro -Kyyjärvi) as a traffic junction. Kyyjärvi is not connected to the Finnish rail network; the nearest train station is 80 kilometers to the west in Lapua .

The municipal administration and the Paletti shopping center are located in the church village . In addition to the church village, the municipality includes the villages of Hokkala, Koskimäki-Huhtala, Kumpula, Noposenaho, Hokkasenaho, Nurmijoki, Oikari, Peuralinna, Pölkki, Saunakylä and Vehkaperä.

history

The area of Kyyjärvi was settled shortly after the end of the last Ice Age, as demonstrated by stone tool finds, especially from the higher northern part of the municipality. A permanent settlement did not develop in the impassable region until the 17th century, beginning on the south bank of the Kyyjärvi. Since the 18th century, one of the few trade routes between the coastal cities and the Finnish inland led through what is now Kyyjärvi, the Savon tie. The battle of Lintulahti was fought on July 3, 1808 in the Russo-Swedish War on this strategically important road on the site of today's church village . Swedish-Finnish troops with a strength of around 650 men faced the Russians Colonel Yegor Vlastov advancing from the north under the command of Major Otto von Fieandt, but had to surrender after violent fighting and retreat to Perho .

Kyyjärvi belonged to the municipality of Karstula until it became independent from the municipality in 1929 . Like many rural communities, Kyyjärvi has been affected by ongoing rural exodus for years; In 1970 the community still had almost 2,000 inhabitants.

Attractions

In Kyyjärvi some manors and village ensembles from the 19th and early 20th centuries have been preserved and are protected as cultural landscapes. The village of Pölkki on the north bank of the lake and the Koskipää, Meriläinen and Niemelä estates, built in the Ostrobothnian style, should be mentioned here .

The first drafts for the church of Kyyjärvi were made in 1914, but construction was not undertaken until 1952–53, so that its shape is characterized by an unadorned functionalism.

politics

As in most rural areas of Finland, the Center Party is the strongest party in Multia . In the 2008 local elections she received over half of the votes. In the municipal council, the highest decision-making body in local affairs, it has 10 out of 17 members. The second largest group is the National Assembly Party with three seats, followed by the Social Democrats with two MPs. The Christian Democrats are also quite well represented, with a double-digit election result and two seats on the city council.

Composition of the municipal council (2009–2012)
Political party 2008 election results Seats
Center Party 56.7% 10
National rally party 17.5% 3
Social democrats 14.6% 2
Christian Democrats 11.2% 2

Kyyjärvi has community partnerships with Luhansk in Ukraine (since 1990 ) and Võnnu in Estonia (since 1990).
