Konnevesi [ ˈkonneʋˌʋesi ] is a municipality in central Finland with almost 3000 inhabitants.

location

The community is located in the countryside of Central Finland 60 km northeast of Jyvaskyla . Neighboring communities are Vesanto in the north, Rautalampi in the east, Hankasalmi in the south, Laukaa in the southwest and Äänekoski in the west.

Konnevesi is part of the historic Savo landscape and was not separated from the neighboring municipality of Rautalampi until 1922. The municipality was named after Lake Konnevesi , which is one of Finland's larger lakes with an area of ​​189 km². A quarter of the area of ​​Konnevesi is covered with water, the total length of the banks is 600 km.

Facilities

The main attraction is the granite church built in 1923 in the style of national romanticism . The Konnevesi Local History Museum has over 20 historic buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. In Siikakoski near Konnevesi there is a research station of the Faculty of Biology and Environmental Sciences at Jyväskylä University .

politics

As in most rural areas of Finland, the Center Party is the strongest party in Konnevesi . In the 2008 local elections it received over half of the votes and has an absolute majority in the local council, the highest decision-making body in local matters, with 12 out of 21 MPs. The second largest group is made up of the Social Democrats with four seats, followed by the left-wing alliance with three seats. The conservative National Assembly Party and the Christian Democrats each have one MP .
