The Federation of Turkish Parents' Associations in Germany e. V. (FÖTED; Turkish : Almanya Türk Veli Dernekleri Federasyonu e.V. ) is a Germany-wide association of non-profit parents' associations that were mainly founded by Turkish immigrants and whose primary interest is the education of their children. The association was founded on November 5th, 1995 in Berlin and is based there.

history

As a result of the arrival of the families of Turkish labor migrants in the 1970s, more and more Turkish parents' associations were founded in 1980 to represent the school interests of the “ guest worker children ” in the Federal Republic. From 1995 onwards, the FÖTED united over 60 of these associations throughout Germany and in 2006 had around 6,000 individual members. Today 24 clubs are members of the federation. The federal chairmen are Berin Arukaslan and Ali Sak (as of September 12, 2015).

"Education offensive"

FÖTED is one of the four major German-Turkish associations that supports the education campaign Education for the Future, which was initiated in the second half of 2006 and supported by German and Turkish media, to improve the educational opportunities of children and young people with a migration background in Germany. The background to this was a special PISA study published in 2006 , according to which the chances of success for pupils with a migration background were not even nearly as poorly guaranteed in any other comparison country as in Germany.

tasks and goals

The aim of the FÖTED has always been to activate German-Turkish parents at the federal, state and local levels in order to promote the solution of the upbringing and education problems of Turkish migrant children and young people. Experiences of local parents' associations in this regard are evaluated by the umbrella organization for their general validity and disseminated further in order to provide the local associations with suitable strategies for their work.

Furthermore, the FÖTED u. a. Personal counseling for parents, arranges bilingual tutors, organizes numerous information evenings and intercultural events and, if necessary, supports parents in dealing with the school-related authorities, if they can hardly perceive the school interests of their children anyway due to a language barrier.
