The municipality includes the places Haapamäki, Hanhitaipale, Hankamäki, Horontaipale, Ihalainen, Kerkonjoensuu, Koipiniemi, Kuuslahti, Rautalampi, Sonkarinsaari, Toholahti and Vaajasalmi.

Municipal council

The dominant political force in Rautalampi is the rural-liberal Center Party . She won over 40% of the vote and 9 of the 21 seats in the local council in the 2017 local elections. They are followed by the right-wing populist True Finns and the Social Democrats with three seats. Also represented in the municipal council are the conservative National Collection Party and the Left Alliance , each with two representatives, as well as the Christian Democrats and the electoral association 3D-ryhmän yhteislista, each with one representative.
