geography

In the Siilinjärvi market square

Siilinjärvi is located in the middle of the eastern Finnish landscape of Northern Savo . The municipality borders on Lapinlahti in the north and the urban area of Kuopios in the northwest, east and south . The city center of Kuopio is 23 kilometers south. Siilinjärvi is closely connected to nearby Kuopio, the largest city in Eastern Finland, and is therefore sometimes referred to as " Espoo von Savo".

The district of Siilinjärvi covers an area of 508 square kilometers. Over a fifth of it consists of inland waterways. In total, there are 135 lakes in Siilinjärvi with an area larger than one hectare. The most important bodies of water are the Juurusvesi lake system in the east and the northern part of the Kallavesi lake in the west of the municipality. The community takes its name from the smaller Siilinjärvi Lake, a tributary of the Juurusvesi, on the banks of which the church village lies.

The Siilinjärvi municipality has four settlement centers ( taajama ). The main town of the municipality is the church village ( Kirkonkylä ) Siilinjärvi, where more than half of the population lives. A second larger settlement center is Toivala-Vuorela, 12 kilometers south of the church village on the road to Kuopio . The two smaller settlement centers Pöljä and Kuuslahti are north of the parish village . The population of the settlement centers of Siilinjärvi on December 31, 2011 was:

  • Siilinjärvi church village (11,189 inhabitants)
  • Toivala-Vuorela (5,284 inhabitants)
  • Pöljä (424 inhabitants)
  • Kuuslahti (217 inhabitants)

history

The Siilinjärvi area was first inhabited in the Neolithic , over 7000 years ago. Archaeological finds from the villages of Kasurila, Rissala and Pöljä bear witness to this. Pöljä even gave its name to a certain type of asbestos ceramic that was first discovered here. During the Bronze Age , Siilinjärvi was inhabited by semi-nomadic Sami . They had several winter villages in what is now the municipality, where they spent the cold season. The name Siilinjärvi is not derived from the Finnish word for "hedgehog" (siili) , but rather goes back to the Sami siihti or siidhi for "winter village". Sedentary Finnish farmers settled in Siilinjärvi by the 16th century at the latest.

The political municipality Siilinjärvi was formed in 1925 from parts of the then rural municipality Kuopio as well as Nilsiä and Maaninka . At that time Siilinjärvi had 4,814 inhabitants. The parish was founded in 1908, initially under the name Kasurila, before it was renamed Siilinjärvi two years later. After the Second World War, around 850 refugees from eastern Karelia , whom Finland had to cede to the Soviet Union, were settled in Siilinjärvi. When the rural community of Kuopio was dissolved in 1969, the area of Siilinjärvis expanded to include the villages of Kehvo, Väänälänranta and Kehvonsalo.

Until the 1960s, Siilinjärvi was clearly rural. This changed when the Kemira group opened a factory and a mine in the municipality. The apatite mine in Siilinjärvi is now by far the largest in Finland with an annual production volume of 9.64 million tons of apatite ore. Gypsum , mica and carbonates are produced as by-products . The newly created jobs led to population growth and increased construction activity. The old church village and the village of Vuorela were expanded into dense settlement centers, the old buildings gave way to modern high-rise buildings and functional buildings. In 2003 the population of the municipality broke through the 20,000 mark for the first time.

population

While large parts of eastern Finland are suffering from population decline and aging due to migration to the growth centers of the south, Siilinjärvi benefits from its proximity to the city of Kuopio. The population of the municipality is constantly increasing. Above all, many families with children move to Siilinjärvi, which is reflected in the population structure: 21.8 percent of the population are younger than 15 years, in the whole of Finland it is 17.3 percent. The educational level of the population is also above average: 63.4 percent of the over 15 year olds have at least a qualification from a vocational school on average, compared to 68.9 percent in Siilinjärvi.

coat of arms

The Siilinjärvi coat of arms was designed in 1956 by the heraldist Olof Eriksson. In the black field it shows two crossed golden leaf sickles, underneath a golden water leaf. The sickle leaves (Finnish kassara ) refer to the village of Kasurila, after which the municipality initially took its name, the water leaf refers to Lake Siilinjärvi, which gave the place of the same name its name.

Town twinning

Siilinjärvi has twinned cities with the following cities and municipalities:

Architectural monuments

The church village of Siilinjärvi

The church village of Siilinjärvi is a very young, completely new-build and quite faceless settlement. In a 1985 survey by Helsingin Sanomat , it was even named the ugliest church village in Finland. Only the local parish church is of architectural interest; the cruciform church was built in brick according to plans by Peko Väänänen, consecrated in 1923 and has a capacity of around 550 people. The ceiling and glass paintings, inspired by Finnish national romanticism, are by Bruno Tuukkanen. As in many places in Savo, the Herättäjä-Yhdistys revival movement is strongly represented in the Lutheran parish in Siilinjärvi . In addition, the Orthodox minority has a church in Siilinjärvi and a chapel in Toivala.

On the other hand, the tranquil village ensembles of Räimä, Haapalahti and Väänälänranta on the north bank of Lake Kallavesi with wooden houses from the 19th century and some even older pasture fences are protected as a cultural landscape.

The former tuberculosis sanatorium Tarinaharju, which opened in 1913, and the former Harjamäki psychiatric clinic are also of interest. The latter was one of the largest clinics of its kind in Finland from 1926 to 1997, with over 1,000 inpatients at times. Today it houses a museum with a permanent exhibition on the history of psychiatry in Finland.

The State Road 17 to Joensuu connects in Vuorela at Siilinjärvi with the national road 5. In the center of Siilinjärvi state highway crosses 5, two other major roads: The main road 75 connects Siilinjärvi about Nilsiä and Nurmes with the north-eastern Kuhmo , the main road 77 leads to the west to Kyyjärvi . Siilinjärvi is connected to the railway network via the Savo Railway from Kouvola to Iisalmi . There are two train stations in the municipality: Toivala and Siilinjärvi.

The Kuopio Airport is in the south of the municipality of Siilinjärvi near the village Rissala. Flight operations began in 1940, and today the airport ranks seventh among the most frequented airports in Finland with a passenger volume of 304,204 . It is served by the airlines Finnair , Finncomm Airlines and Blue1 and is also used by the Finnish Air Force . The Karelia Squadron ( Karjalan lennosto ), one of three squadrons of the Finnish Air Force, is stationed at the airport . The Karelia squadron serves 600 soldiers and has 20 F-18 Hornet fighters .
