Maaninka [ mɑːniŋkɑ ] ( Swedish historically Maninga ) is a former municipality in the Finnish region of Savo in the countryside Savo . The village on Maaninkajärvi (Lake Maaninka) is located about 45 kilometers northwest of the city of Kuopio , to which the former municipality has belonged since January 1, 2015. On September 30, 2014, the municipality had 3749 inhabitants on an area of ​​575.15 km² (108.46 km² of which were inland waters).

Maaninka is quite rural. Almost a quarter of the population works in the agricultural sector. Maaninka is connected to the Savo waterways by several canals. The main attractions of the municipality are in nature: the Korkeakoski , at 46 meters the highest waterfall in Finland, and the bird sanctuaries of the lakes Patajärvi, Patalahti, Lapinjärvi and Iso-Valkeinen.

Municipal council

The dominant political force in Maaninka was the rural-liberal Center Party . It achieved an absolute majority in the 2012 local elections with a good 52% of the vote and 12 of the 21 seats. They are followed by the right-wing populist True Finns and the Social Democrats , each with three seats. Also represented in the municipal council were the “Independent Maaninka List”, which appeared for the first time, with two representatives and the conservative National Collection Party with one representative.
