The rural municipality of Kuopio ( Finnish. Kuopion maalaiskunta , Swedish. Kuopio landskommun ) is a former municipality in eastern Finland . It existed until 1969 and included the area around the city of Kuopio .

In the course of the history of the rural community, its area has been reduced several times: in 1922, the municipality of Vehmersalmi (which was again incorporated into the city of Kuopio in 2005) was detached from the rural community of Kuopio. In 1925 the municipality of Siilinjärvi was formed from parts of the rural municipality of Kuopio and Nilsiä and Maaninka . In 1942 suburban areas were incorporated into the city of Kuopio. On January 1, 1969, the rural community of Kuopio was finally dissolved. Most of the municipal area was added to the city of Kuopio, a smaller part around the villages of Kehvo, Väänälänranta and Kehvonsalo went to Siilinjärvi. Most recently, the rural community of Kuopio had an area of 588 square kilometers and 8,930 inhabitants (1963).
